About this website

Well, you had to see what clicking there did, didn't you?

This website is entirely hand-coded, using an HTML 5 core, client and server-side JavaScript and more than a little CSS trickery.

If you got lost during that sentence, then now is probably a good time to go to the News page, as that has pictures and isn't at all technical. Meanwhile, if this website looks really bad and things are overlapping or chunky on your screen, then that’s a good indication that you might need to upgrade your system to take advantage of new technology that became industry standard in 2015.

If you’re still following along, no webpage generating tools were used in the making of this website and no third-party add-ins are deployed, although it links to Google and FontAwesome for some of the carets used in the buttons. Server-side Javascript and PHP scripts manage the database interaction and file transactions such as reading news stories and logging page clicks.

I started the first code for the website on Christmas Day 2022, and had everything pretty much wrapped for the website you now see by Twelfth Night. Admittedly, I might have spent a few late nights coding, but it was good fun and I hope that you appreciate the results.

The actual coding was done in Microsoft Visual Studio, while original graphics were prepared using Corel Paintshop Pro.

The site is hosted using Windows servers on FastHosts in the United Kingdom while the back-end database is SQL-Server 2018, running locally on servers at Jules Greenwall Services (in my loft, to be precise).

The London Logo

The “London” logo has, of course, the roundel for the Order as its background, with the word LONDON across using the original Johnston typeface with diamond spaced ruling lines as used in the very early days of the Tube system. It is also no co-incidence that the ratio of the word and the roundel matches that on the Transport for London logo.
The final and perhaps more subtle detail is the Scarlet Cord in the approximate shape of the River Thames, draped across the logo.
